Our purpose is to provide engaging and meaningful learning activities and field experiences to enable girls’ exploration of science and math connections to visual and performing arts.
Our work at S.M.Art Girlz, Inc. is purposefully focused on girls’ success in college-preparatory math and science coursework because research suggests that:
• Self-confidence instilled by parents and teachers is more important for young girls learning math and science than their initial interest.
• Girls begin to disengage from math and science as early as 3rd grade. Research shows this trend repeats in middle- and high-school particularly when girls do not feel supported by math and science teachers.
• High school girls’ decision to take additional college-preparatory math and science courses is highly influenced by their friends.
• While more women are pursuing higher level education and doctoral degrees, the number of women pursuing professional careers in science, technology, engineering and math is rapidly declining.
We believe every girl should be encouraged to pursue and achieve her best dreams. Each dream is her choice. Our future depends on all of them.
